Train Town Montclair: A Rails to Roots Story

Train Town Montclair: A Rails to Roots Story,

pulls into the station this May with a cargo of fun, informative experiences highlighting Montclair's fascinating railroad history. Featuring music, history talks, art-making, and train tales storytimes,  the month-long series will travel across Montclair, with events at the Judy Weston Garden at Watchung Park, Erie Park near the Walnut Street train station, and Montclair Art Museum. Train Town is a collaboration with Montclair History Center, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair Public Library, and musicians Jason Didner and the GSPs.

Montclair has six train stations — the highest density per square mile of any New Jersey township. Train Town Montclair sheds light on how the railroads made Montclair what it is today, inviting residents of all ages to discover how trains shaped the infrastructure of community, culture, and daily life here and beyond.

The Judy Weston Garden will mount two newly commissioned illustrated historical maps, created in collaboration with Montclair History Center and designed by artist Elly Otharsson. Montclair History Center will lead a “Walk and Talk” on Montclair railroad history. Montclair Art Museum will offer art-making, outdoor activities, and a guided tour of their upcoming exhibition, Shifting Terrain: Perspectives on Land in North America — which explores how landscapes, real and imagined, are shaped by movement, infrastructure, and human experience. Montclair Public Library will bring train tales to life for young children at a storytime at Judy Weston Garden. And indie musicians Jason Didner and the GSPs will perform songs of trains, travel, and connection.
